AbstractDe-excitation dynamics of small molecules investigated by femtosecond multiphoton ionization By using home-made solid-state kilohertz femtosecond laser system and time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS), the de-excitation dynamics of small molecules, such as OCS, CS2 and NH3, are investigated in real time. The cross correlation width is identified as 141fs by Xe pump-probe experiment. The lifetime of OCS in its Rydberg state [1] is experimentally determined to be fs for the first time. This picosecond decay process indicates that the excited state is predissociative. Rydberg states of CS2 [2] de-excites in 948 ± 23 fs. For NH3, for the first real-time, the lifetime constant in ¢1A1¢ state is determined as 936 ± 92 fs. The internal conversion predissociation mechanism of the ¢1A1¢ state, suggested by Dixon et al. [3] can be used to interpret this de-excitation process.
