摘要: Sponges and their associated microorganisms are the richest source for bioactive compounds in the animal kingdom. These compounds have been "trimmed" by evolution for over 800 million years to highest pharmacological activity. The development of modern cell- and molecular biological techniques will allow a sustainable exploitation of these valuable resources. This task is of highest priority in biomedicine and biotechnology and its solution requires the combination of the expertise of groups and teams from different countries on European level. Only an integrated effort will allow to provide the required sufficient amounts of compounds needed for clinical trials.
