AbstractA series of iron nitride catalysts were prepared by temperature-programmed reaction method and evaluated in a microreactor for hydrazine decomposition. The catalytic activity of silica-supported iron nitride was apparently higher than that of silica-supported iron oxide and iron catalysts. The noble-metal-like character of the nitride may be responsible for the high catalytic activity. Bulk iron nitride catalysts prepared at different temperatures had different bulk structures and different catalytic activities. The catalysts prepared at lower temperatures contained more nitrogen in the bulk and were better than those prepared at higher temperatures. Iron nitride with higher surface area and smaller particle size produced higher catalytic activity and higher H2 selectivity at high temperatures. Iron nitride catalyst was also compared with molybdenum nitride and niobium nitride, and the catalytic activities for hydrazine decomposition increased in the order NbN <
