AbstractRoom temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) have been considered as “green”, recyclable alternatives to the traditional volatile organic solvents because of their chemical and physical properties, such as being liquid at room temperature, good stability in air and moisture, high solubility, and neglectable vapor pressure. In particularly, ILs have been employed as catalysts in many catalytic processes. Esterification of alcohols by carboxylic acids is one of the most important reactions in organic synthesis. Recently, several Brøsted acidic ILs were applied in esterification as dual solvent-catalysts and obtained good alcohol conversion and high ester selectivity.However, rare work has focused on water, which is the simultaneous product and may dilute the ILs to make the activity change of ILs. In this work, we investigated the influence of water on various typical Brøsted acidic ILs, with the esterification reaction of n-butanol and acetic acid as a probe to determine the Brøsted acidities of the ILs.
