AbstractMono-dispersed Pt and Pt-Fe bimetallic nanoparticles supported over nano-sized silica spheres have been successfully fabricated by grafting-reduction method. TEM reveals Pt and bimetallic Pt-Fe nanoparticles prepared by this method have narrow size distribution of ca. 3.0 and 4.0 nm respectively, while the size of silica spheres is around 30 nm. The assynthesized PrFe@SiO2 and Pt@SiO2 catalyst were evaluated for CO selective ocidation in gas mixture of 0.5 vol.%O2,1.0 vol.% CO, and 98.5 vol.%H2.100% oxygen conversion and 70% selectivity towards CO were achieced over Pt@SiO2 at 473K. However, for PtFe@SiO2 catalyst, the 100% CO conversion and 100% CO selectivity were observed at room temperature, indicating that the addition of iron has changed the structure of platunum nanoparticles and thus the catalytic preformance. Coupling the TEM, H2-TPR, in-situ XPS and pulse-reaction data, it is concluded that no alloy has been formed over the active Pt-Fe bimatallic catalyst. While the iron served as the catalytic center for oxygen adsorption and dissociation, it changed the mode of CO adsorption over platinum and the reaction path for Co oxidation.
