AbstractBased on the phase characterization using a surface sensitive technique, UV Raman spectroscopy combined with XRD, visible Raman spectroscopy, HRTEM, and SEM, we found that photocatalytic activity of TiO2 can be greatly increased both for rutile deposited on anatase and for anatase deposited on rutile. These findings show that surface phase junction between anatase and rutile TiO2 is formed, and the formation of the surface phase junction could promote the charge separation in surface region. This finding reveals a general essence that the surface phase junction formed on a semiconductor photocatalyst is beneficial to the enhancement of charge separation, and consequently the photocatalytic activity.
