摘要: 5-Hydroxyfurfural (HMF) is an important bio-based chemical intermediate. It can be further transformed into other chemicals such as 2,5-disubstituted furan derivatives and levulinic acid. One such compound is 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), which can be produced via selective hydrogenation of HMF. DMF was proposed as a novel biofuel substance, and has received considerable attention recently. However, challenges remain to attain HMF from various hexoses in a selective and cost-effective way. In this paper, we would like to report our results on HMF production using ionic liquid as a solvent. We found that hexoses could be converted into HMF in ionic liquids in the presence of acids. The acid catalysts were HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, H3PO4, maleic acid, C4mimHSO4 or SbmimHSO4; and the ionic solvents were C4mimCl, C6mimCl, C4mimBr, AmimCl or C2mimCl, etc. Typical reaction conditions were: catalyst loading 0.5 - 50 wt%; temperature 80 oC - 100 oC, reaction time 3 min - 300 min, and at atmospheric pressure. HMF yield was up to 98% under optimal conditions with fructose. Other hexoses such as glucose and galactose gave a yield around 30%, but sucrose afforded 76% yield. We also demonstrated that HMF could be recovered via distillation under reduced pressure and the ionic liquids recycled and reused. Thus, our method showed an advantage in terms of selectivity, catalyst loading and separation process, and would be useful for large-scale production of HMF in the future.
