摘要: Abstract Microencapsulation(Fig.1) provides a simple and cost-effective way to enclose bioactive materials, such as cells(Fig.2) and drugs(Fig.3), within a semi-permeable polymeric membrane for the purpose of protecting the bioactive materials and controlled release of the enclosed substances or their products〔1-3〕. This article presents an overview of microencapsulation for biomedical applications, with focus on the progress achieved in our laboratory. After a description of the materials chemistry and properties of natural polysaccharide-based microcapsule, applications of microencapsulation for cell cultureand implantation have been highlighted. In addition, the challenges and opportunities for chemists to be able to assist in the development of microencapsulation have been discussed. Moreover, it is feasible for biomicroencapsule to be a novel immunoisolation protocol for the coculture between stem cells and stromal cells. Microencapsulated stromal cells could support the ex vivo expansion of human cord blood HSCs outside microcapsules effectively and they can be removed completely after coculture.
