A Novel Bi-functional Oxygen Electrode Electrocatalyst for a Unitized Regenerative Fuel Cell

英文摘要Unitized regenerative fuel cells (URFCs) are electrochemical cells working both as fuel cells and water electrolyzers. In the electrolysis mode, the water is electrolyzed to hydrogen and oxygen, which are recombined to produce electricity in the subsequent fuel cell mode. With the advantages of being free from self-discharge and theoretically higher energy densities, URFCs are especially considered as the promising energy storage systems for space applications. The fabrication of active electrocatalysts for oxygen redox reactions at the oxygen electrode is one of the key technologies in the development of URFC. Pt is the suitable catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), but its activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is low. On the other hand, the catalysts for OER, such as Ir, Ru and their oxides, present poor activities for ORR. Normally, the mixtures of Pt black and OER catalysts are used as the bifunctional oxygen electrode electrocatalyst. Because of the poor combination between the two kinds of catalysts, the URFCs show poor performance, especially in the fuel cell mode. In the present study, Pt/IrO2 was prepared and mixed with Pt black to be used as the bifunctional oxygen electrode electrocatalyst. With this novel electrocatalyst, the three phase reaction area where Pt, Nafion and oxygen met was enlarged attributed to the better use of the space occupied by IrO2 in the fuel cell mode, and the cell performance was improved dramatically. The highest power density of the cell is more than one and a half times that of the cell using the mixture of Pt and IrO2 as electrocatalyst. Additionally, the cell performance in water electrolysis mode was also improved.
