题名: Facile synthesis of Nafion-stabilized iridium nanoparticles and its direct use for fuel cell and water electrolyzers

摘要: Nanoparticles (NPs) are of great interest for their promise use as advanced materials,and an effective way to obtain a better control of the shape, particle size and size distribution is using stabilizes. However, normally in order to obtain more active surface, removal treatments of the stabilizers such as heating or washing should be done which make the synthesis complex. Iridium (Ir) is a good catalyst for hydrogenation reaction, and Ir-based metals are widely used in water electrolysis for their high activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Additionally, Ir and its chalcogenides are being studied as electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction, especially for direct methanol fuel cell ascribed to their selective activity towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in the presence of methanol. As solid electrolyte used in fuel cells and water electrolyzers, Nafion is a kind of negative charged polymer with sulfonic acid groups, thus the synthesis of nanoparticles using Nafion as stabilizer is of practical interest. In this work, Nafion-stabilized Ir NPs were synthesized, and the weight ratio of Nafion : Ir was set to be 22 : 100 according to that in the electrodes of fuel cells and water electrolyzers. Converted to molar ratio by the EW value of the Nafion (1100 g/mol), the sulfonic acid groups : Ir was about 3.8 : 100, much lower than the ratio of stabilizers : NPs in the general synthesis. However, the particle size of the Ir NPs was well controlled, about 1 nm, and a quite high electrochemically active surface area was obtained. Investigated through electrochemical characterizations, the Nafion-Ir presented comparable activity to commercial Pt black towards ORR, especially when supported on carbon black. As catalyst for water electrolysis, the Nafion-Ir showed higher activity than traditional catalyst, and its durability was quite good during the accelerated life test. The colloid product could be directly used to fabricate electrodes without further addition or removal of Nafion in practical use, simplifying the whole process. The single cell obtained attractive performances for either fuel cell or water electrolyzer.
