题名: Properties of polymer electrolyte membranes based on OPBI and SOPBI for high temperature PEMFCs

摘要: Phosphoric acid (PA)-doped polybenzimidazoles(PBIs) membranes are currently being explored widely because of their potential applications in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). In the polybenzimidazole (PBI) family, poly[2,2’-(m-phenylene)-5,5’-bibenzimidazole] have been studied intensively due to their commercial availability. However, their poor solubility and processibility restrict their applications. Here, poly[2,2’-(p-oxydiphenylene)-5,5’-bibenzimidazole] (OPBI) were synthesised and their sulfonated derivatives (SOPBI) were prepared under mild conditions. The ether linkages increase their solubility in polar organic solvents. Therefore, high molecular weight OPBI with good solubility are obtained. The properties of PA-doped OPBI membranes, including phosphoric acid uptake, swelling ratio, mechanical properties and thermal properties, are fully investigated and compared with PA-doped SOPBI membranes. Moreover, the cell performance of PA-doped OPBI and SOPBI membranes are evaluated. When doped in different concentration of H3PO4 solution, OPBI membranes uptake more acid than SOPBI membranes. SOPBI membranes exhibit obviously low swelling ratio in thickness direction than OPBI membranes. With acid uptake about 110wt%, corresponding doping level around 5, PA-doped OPBI and SOPBI membranes exhibit reasonably high tensile strength. Moreover, PA-doped OPBI membranes exhibit peak power density of 0.78 W cm-2 at 170 oC and 0.25 MPa. With the same acid uptake, PA-doped SOPBI membranes displayed similar fuel cell performance to that of PA-doped OPBI membranes.
