题名: A novel Pt-modified Au electrocatalyst for borohydride oxidation in DBFC

摘要: Direct borohydride fuel cell (DBFC) is currently under increasing interests as a potential power source for portable application due to its theoretical high energy density, good electrochemical performance and easy handling of the fuel. However, its final application undergoes a few drawbacks, the first of which being its ability to hydrolyze to hydrogen gas on many electrode catalysts. Hydrogen evolution not only reduces coulombic efficiency but also causes safety problems of the fuel cell system. Therefore, the development of the novel anode catalyst for DBFC with high activity for borohydride oxidation and low hydrogen production is required. Gold is widely investigated as an effective catalyst for borohydride oxidation and almost no activity for borohydride hydrolysis. However, it usually demonstrates slow electrode kinetics and thus low current and power output. In this work, the Au nanoparticles are modified with Pt by two different methods to enhance the catalytic activity towards the electro-oxidation of borohydride. The carbon-supported Pt-modified Au catalysts are prepared by the seed mediate method (PtAu-1) and the simultaneous chemical reduction method (PtAu-2) and compared with the unmodified Au catalyst (Au-3). The catalysts are charaterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements and single cell tests are conducted to evaluate the catalytic behaviors of the catalysts. The results show that PtAu-1 catalyst presents the best catalytic activity towards borohydride oxidation. The maximum power densities of the DBFC using the PtAu-1, PtAu-2 and Au-3 catalysts at 40 oC are 112 mW cm-2, 97 mW cm-2 and 65 mW cm-2, respectively. In addition, the DBFC employing PtAu-1 as the anode catalyst also shows the highest maximum coulombic efficiency of 80% in 1 M NaBH4 and 90% in 0.5 M NaBH4. Thus the PtAu-1 catalyst is promising to serve as a specific and efficient electrocatalyst for borohydride oxidation in DBFC.
