题名: A Novel Non-Precious Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction in PEMFCs

摘要: Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) as an ideal power source conversion plant have attracted much attention due to their advantages of high power density, high efficiency and near zero emissions. However, the further development of PEMFCs faces some serious unsolved technical problems such as cost and durability. Pt is regarded as the most active catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in PEMFCs but occurs in nature at very low levels of abundance. Thus, economical and effective catalysts are required and cost-effective routes are being sought to make more-applicable catalysts . Cobalt based non-precious metal catalysts are prepared using a chelation approach. And the as-prepared catalysts are characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The ORR activities of the catalysts are studied by electrochemical measurements and single cell tests, respectively. Rotating disk electrode (RDE) experiments indicate that the optimized as-prepared catalyst exhibits an onset potential for ORR as high as 0.8V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). The maximum power density of the single cell with the as-prepared catalyst as the cathode catalyst is about 200 mW cm−2. This non-precious electrocatalyst shows a good stability in acid media and presents a promising electrocatalytic activity for the ORR with an approximate four-electron process. It might have the possibility to be an alternative of the Pt-based electrocatalysts.
