AbstractH2 production from photocatalytic reaction which mimicking nature photosynthesis has recently attracted much attention [1,2]. Here we report a hybrid photocatalytic system which composed of semiconductor and mimetic hydrogenase (CdS/CoIII(dmgH)2pyCl) can effectively enhance the visible light-driven hydrogen producing activity. The rate of H2 evolution catalyzed by this combined catalysts is 30 times faster than that obtained merely using CdS as photocatalyst under the same conditions. More than 42 turnovers (based on CoIII(dmgH)2pyCl) can be achieved during 6 h photacatalysis. From a series of parallel experiment, the reaction mechanism is postulated to involve: 1) the production of photoinduced electron on CdS; 2) the transfer to Co complex to form reduced species CoI(dmgH)2pyCl; 3) combination with H+ and then release of H2. The process of H2 evolution for the hybrid photocatalytic system reported here is very analogic to the one for photosystem I in algae.
