AbstractConversion of cellulose and lignocellulose in ionic liquids Changzhi Li, Zehui Zhang, Zongbao (Kent) Zhao Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, CAS, Dalian 116023, PR China Monomeric carbohydrates are the most important materials that can be directly used as feedstock for production of biofuel and bio-based chemicals. However, carbohydrates are more widely presented as polymers such as starch, cellulose, hemicellulose and chitin. So far, hydrolysis of starch has been well-established. Because cellulose and hemicellulose exist routinely and concurrently with lignin as found in lignocellulosic biomass, and cellulose forms a highly crystalline structure due to the presence of extensive intra- and inter-molecular hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions, it remains a major challenging for cost-effective hydrolysis of cellulosic materials. Many efforts have been devoted to depolymerization of cellulose and subsequent transformations. These included acidic hydrolysis, enzymatic hydrolysis, hydrolysis in supercritical water and oxidative or reductive depolymerization. However, most previous works performed reactions under heterogeneous conditions, i.e., solid cellulosic materials in aqueous media, which made the reaction inefficient. We recently demonstrated that hydrolysis of cellulose and cellulosic materials could be realized much more efficiently in ionic liquids under mild conditions, yet no pretreatment process was necessary. In addition, chemical transformation of lignocellulosic materials, such as corn stover and wood chips, in ionic liquids produced furan derivatives 5-hydroxyfurfural and furfural in high yields. As separation of ionic liquids from monomeric carbohydrates or furan derivatives is readily achievable, conversion of biomass in ionic liquids should be a powerful technology to extract biofuels and chemicals form renewable resources.
