AbstractIonization source is one of the most important parts for ion mobility spectrometer. A novel ultraviolet radiation ionization (UVRI) source based on a commercial VUV Kr lamp was developed for ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), which could operate in both negative and positive ion mode. The negative reactant ions and its formation mechanism were investigated. The negative reactant ions were predominantly assigned to be O3-(H2O)n with purified air as carrier and drift gases, which is different from that in 63Ni source. The formation of O3-(H2O)n was ascribed to the formation of large number of ozone molecules due to ultraviolet radiation. Its applications as a negative ion source was investigated, it was shown that the ionization efficiency was high for ionization explosives as ANFO, DINA, RDX, PETN and the signal intensity of PETN with UVRI is 4 times of that with 63Ni source under same experimental conditions. It can be used to ionize efficiently inorganic molecules as SO2, CS2, and H2S, HSCH3CH3SH and the limit of detection can reach sub-ppb level. Also, its applications as a positive source will be introduced.
