题名: Synthesis of amino acid ionic liquids from precursor [EMIM]OH via bipolar membrane electrodialysis

摘要: A new environmentally benign process for the production of aqueous solutions of 1,3-dialkylimidazolium hydroxide [EMIM]OH is presented. Electrodialysis (ED) is an electrochemical membrane separation process in which ions are separated or concentrated. Commercially available ion exchange membranes (FuMATech GmbH, fumasep, FKB, FBM, FAB) were integrated into an electrodialysis unit (ED64004, PCA) according to a three-cell setup. Electrodialysis with bipolar membranes (EDBM) was implemented to produce the hydroxide-based precursor in approx. 5% concentration in water from the non-toxic bulk ionic liquid [EMIM][EtOSO3]. The concentration of [EMIM]OH in the product solution was determined by titration with 0.1M HCl solution. Using phenolphthalein as indicator. Then the precursor [EMIM]OH was neutralized with equiv. mol amino acids and water is the only byproduct formed during this neutralization reaction and no organic solvents are needed. Moreover, several other structurally new ionic liquids can be synthesized by reaction of the aqueous precursor solution with different acids. The whole process — including the simple conversion of OH-based precursors into the final ionic liquids by merely adding an acid of choice — has great potential for the development of novel and especially task-specific ionic liquids. Furthermore, the process is not only very flexible with respect to capacity and feed applied, but also applicable for transferring to larger scales.
