AbstractSulfur compounds in oils are a major source of air pollutants with high environmental impact. With the environment regulation becoming more and more stringent, removal of sulfur compounds from oils has attracted a lot of attention. There are many technologies that can be used to remove thiols, sulfides and disulfides from oils, such as hydrodesulfurization, adsorption and bio-processes. However, conventional technologies have proven not to be efficient enough because of its rigorous operating conditions and high capital cost. Recently the oxidation of sulfur compounds combined with a subsequent extractive desulfurization process has received wide attention, which is considered to be one of the most promising among various processes. Organic sulfides can be oxidized selectively to sulfoxides and sulfones, and they can be removed by polar extractants, thus oil with ultralow sulfur contents can be achieved. However, traditional extractants are usually flammable and volatile organic compounds, which led to severe environmental and safety concerns. Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) have attracted much attention in different areas of chemistry due to its novel chemical and physical properties such as nonvolatility, thermally stability, broad liquids range, nonflammability and wide electrochemical window. In recent years, there are many reports on the desulfurization of oils by chemical oxidation combined with extraction. In this study, desulfurization of oils by ionic liquids is investigated by oxidation combined with extraction process. After careful selection of cationic and anionic structures, [EimC4SO3H]+ was selected as cation and [NTf2]-, [HSO4]- as anions to enhance extraction efficiency. Effects of its process parameters will be studied in details such as extraction time, ratio of extraction phase (IL phase : Oil phase), pH of extraction systems, concentration of extracted phase, addition of power supply, etc. Then the mechanisms of this process still on the way, so that we can build up the foundation for the designs of the new functionalized ionic liquids. According to the above results, we will design the new functionalized ionic liquids that are more suitable for the chemical oxidation combined with extraction process. Then the process parameters will be studied in detail so that we can find the favorite ionic liquids that can be used for the desulfurization.
