题名: Formation of identical-size graphene nanoclusters on metal surfaces

摘要: Nanographene including graphene nanoribbon (GNR) and graphene nanocluster (GNC) is characterized with its single graphite sheet in the thickness and nano-dimension in the lateral size. Due to the quantum confinement effects and edge states, graphene nanostructures demonstrate unique electronic/magnetic properties and chemical reactivity. However, fabrication of uniform GNCs still remains challenging. Meanwhile, nanographene regarded as building block for large area graphene layer is crucial for understanding and controlling of graphene epitaxial growth on metal surfaces. Here, we report the formation of identical-size GNCs on Ru(0001) mediated by carbon and substrate interaction, and their structures were determined using atomic resolution scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Both seven C6-ring (7-C6) and three C6-ring (3-C6) structures nano graphene with dome-shape structure were first experimentally identified on Ru(0001), whose appearance were independent of the carbon precursors (e.g. ethylene and coronene) while dependent on the substrate metal surfaces. This substrate-induced spontaneous clustering shows a promising method to grow GNCs, which could be used as an ideal model to study graphene edges’ activities in catalysis.
