Microwave Assisted Conversion of Cellulose and Lignocellulose into Value-added Chemicals in Ionic Liquids

英文摘要Lignocellulosic materials, mainly composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, are renewable resources that assume the potential to serve as a sustainable feedstock for future alternative fuels and chemicals, in lieu of diminishing fossil resource. Due to the presence of extensive intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions among biopolymer chains, cellulose forms a highly crystalline structure, which determine their insoluble property in common organic solvents and limit their homogeneous processing and conversion. Therefore, it remains a major challenging for cost-effective conversion of cellulose and lignocellulose. Ionic liquids exhibit good ability to dissolve biopolymers including lignocellulose and cellulose, which lead to a new homogeneous platform for their processing and conversion. In our labotary, we firstly demonstrated that cellulose and lignocellulose could be hydrolyzed much more efficiently in ionic liquids by mineral acid or acidic ionic liquids under mild conditions. and it was also found that the usage of microwave irradiation (MI) can accelerate the conversion of cellulose to hdroxymethyl furfural or furan dramatically with high yield and selectivity. Additionally, we have developed a novel method for the conversion of cellulose and lignocellulosic materials to furan derivatives directly with high yields in ionic liquids assisted by microwave irradiation, and the reaction can finish in several minutes. In a word, MI assisted ionic liquids-platform has shown the potential being as an energy-efficient and cost-effective approach for the conversion of biomass into biofuels and platform chemicals from renewable resources.
