AbstractOxygen carriers such as metalloporphyrin, metallophthalocyanine and cobalt Schiff base etc., were effective catalysts for oxidation of phenols to quinones. The influence of the aqueous soluble oxygen carriers on the oxidation of trimethylphenol was investigated under various conditions. In homogeneous reaction system, DMF was a good solvent in which high yield was achieved; with addition of NaOH in homogeneous system, the conversion increased and the selectivity decreased; in water-oil biphase system, condensation product was readily produced; after the reaction being carried out in DMF + toluene homogeneous system, the catalyst could be extracted with dilute Na2CO3 solution.
