AbstractGas permeation through poly(dimethyl siloxane) coated polysulfone hollow fiber composite membranes was investigated. A semi-empirical correlation between the permselectivity to H-2/N-2 and the permselectivity to O-2/N-2 for a given membrane was developed on the basis of the phenomenological resistance model. taking into account the Knudsen diffusion through the defects that were not 'repaired' by the surface coating. This correlation can be used to predict the membrane performance for H-2/N-2 separation from the H-2/N-2 separation data, which can be obtained more economically from an air separation test. The validity of the correlation was justified with experimental data, Since H-2 is not required in evaluating the membrane performance for H-2/N-2, separation, this provides an economical tool for membrane evaluation and quality assurance in the development and manufacturing of industrial hydrogen separation membranes. Although the present work focuses on poly(dimethyl siloxane)/polysulfone composite membranes, the same approach can be applied to the other so-called 'resistance model' type of membranes.
