AbstractA small low-pressure electroosmotic flow (EOF) pump capable of generating pressure of 1.6 atm with flow rates on the order of several hundred mu L/min has been designed and evaluated. The pump consisted of direct current ( DC) power supply, nylon column packed with porous silica particles, platinum wire electrode and pressure transducer. The packed electroosmotic pump (EOP) column is nylon tube which has dimension of 0 6 x 12 mm and packed with 45 mu m silica particles. The effect of driven voltage and current on pressure and flow rate of the pump was studied. Results showed both pressure and flow rate linearly increased with the voltage and current; however, the curve deviated the linear near to flow rate-axis when the voltage was over 300 V. Deionized water and 0.5. mmol/L KCl solution were used as a working fluid in order to study the effect of driven voltage and current on output pressure and flow rate. In this EOF pump, the gas produced in electrode chamber and electroosmotic column was instantly removed and then the pump can continuously work over one week. The pump may be applied in micro total analysis system, flow injection analysis and delivery liquid in micro-reaction, and so on.
